Let's hear it for the true hero of this story: Multiple Miggs. If he hadn't thrown his spunk at Clarice, Hannibal wouldn't have been so offended by his discourtesy that he felt compelled to help her, so Clarice wouldn't have caught Bill and he would have kept on killing.

I admit, I too was confused FOR YEARS by "HOW DID HE GET THE PEN??", but it's really simple. Chilton just left it in the cell and Hannibal picked it up when he was let out of his restraints. People (including me) in their mind don't recognise he's wearing a different mask and clothes in the two scenes so there was obviously a transition of time where he got the pen (I have a theory that Barney helped him too).

Maybe im weird but ive watched this film multiple times and the only male that I clocked as being distinctly "Creepy" was the one and only Dr. Chilton. This is especially so now that im older. I see Starling and her female peer as literal trailblazers, being Field Agents for the BAU which deals with the worst of the worst. In '91 women were fresh to active combat duty in the Army and even then. These are young girls (Equivalent of the youngest Gen Z in our time) being around brutally mutilated corpses. In small towns that just doesnt happen. Women are generally expected to be protected from that kind of trauma as much as possible, when possible. Crawford was viewing Starling as a bright up and comer, who, while relatively well-rounded, is shown to be far more intellectually prodigious than she is skilled in combat. The cops were basically dealing with a 5 new aspects of reality all at once that they had to immediately sort through when she showed up to a grisly murder that turned their stomachs(see:life-changing trauma) and started ordering them about as likely the first woman who outranks them as an officer of the peace who is likely closer in age to their daughters than they are to her. Barney was the stand up guy. Miggs was essentislly incurably criminally insane. Hannibal is an inquisitive super-genius predator. The Bug Guys were usually Turbonerd Autists and the lazy eye guy went to shoot his shot and didnt even end up all that bad. Why would he be labeled creepy. Legitimately everyonr looks at someine they like like that especially if they want their attention. If Jake Gyllenhall or Robert Downey Jr were cast in his role, I doubt they'd get labeled creepy and get more of a respinse like "Omg, look how he's looking at her! I totally ship them" Dude gets called creepy as a defacto truth cause he looks goofy until Clarice and him have the cute exchange and ok only then are opinions willing to be changed. Last is Dr. "The Jaw" Chilton. And yeah dude is a turbocreep 8000 with brand spanking new punchable face and insecure ego pre- installed. Hands down.

Because it's all from Clarice's point of view, the way that she is constantly exposed to men staring at her and making her uncomfortable, throughout the whole film, it's a recurring motif. Silence of the Lambs was really ahead of its time, criticising sexism without being in your face about it. It made a point about the male gaze before that became a thing in mainstream media

I saw a reaction to this scene by I believe some real CSI forensics expert who does these sorts of jobs, and they said they don't put anything under their noses during an autopsy examination either and that this scene isn't very realistic, because 1) you might mask the unpleasantness of the smell but you're still smelling it regardless, and more importantly 2) because it can only cause you to miss an important clue or evidence. So you really just have to get over yourself. And it seems sufficiently noteworthy that the guy with glasses who seems like a professional medical examiner in the scene is the one person who don't bother doing it at all.

During the training sequence Starling messed up the was her corner to clear she was on that side the guy can’t turn to her with his gun cuz she was in his line of sight if he did that. Female or male doesn’t matter she didn’t follow her training.
